Surrogacy is a method of medically assisted reproduction where the surrogate or gestational carrier carries and gives birth to a child for another person or couple which is known as intended parents. Intended parents usually choose surrogacy for various reasons such as infertility, medical conditions, LGBTQ+ individuals/couples and even recurrent pregnancy loss.
The process of surrogacy is as follows:
- Embryo Creation: Eggs and sperm are combined through IVF to create an embryo.
- Implantation: The embryo is implanted into the surrogates uterus.
- Pregnancy: The surrogate then carries the pregnancy to term.
- Birth: The surrogate gives birth and the baby is then given to the intended parents.
